Hovawart is not only a great watchman, but also a fun cute companion
Hovawart is a breed of guard and corral dogs dating back to about 7 centuries. Having practically disappeared in the XIX century, the breed has revived, and today it is gaining popularity in Europe and the USA. Due to its character, wisdom, intelligence and devotion, the Hovawarts are not only a great watchman, but also a funny cute companion.
The first mention of the breed dates back to 1210, when the German castle Ordensritterburg was surrounded by Slavic tribes. The castle fell, its inhabitants are devoted to the sword, including the lord. Only the son of the Lord escaped, who was brought to a nearby castle by a wounded dog. Subsequently, this boy will become a legendary figure in the history of German laws - Eike von Repgau. He will create the Sachsenspiegel (published in 1274), Germany's oldest code of laws. Hovawarts will also be mentioned in this code, for the killing or theft of which faces severe punishment. It was in 1274 that the first mention of the breed dates from the year, but they existed long before it.
In 1473, the breed was mentioned in the book “Five Noble Breeds” as an excellent helper in the fight against thieves and criminals. This means that it was already formed at that time, as a separate breed, which is a rather rare case for medieval Europe.
With the end of the Middle Ages, the breed's popularity declined. Especially when Germany came together and the country was swept by a technical revolution. New breeds enter the arena, for example, a German shepherd. It supplants the Hovawarts in the service and by the twentieth century they are almost disappearing.
In 1915, a group of enthusiasts joined forces to preserve and restore the breed. The group is headed by zoologist and scientist Kurt König. He collects dogs from farms in the Black Forest. He crosses the best of them with kuvas, newfoundland, leonberger, Bernese mountain dog.
In 1922 the first nursery was registered, in 1937 the German Kennel Club recognized the breed. But almost everything was lost with the outbreak of World War II. Most dogs die, only a few remain after the war. Only in 1947 did enthusiasts again create a club - Rassezuchtverein für Hovawart-Hunde Coburg, which still exists today. They restore the breed again and in 1964 it was recognized as one of the seven working breeds of Germany, and over time it gained recognition in other countries.

Description of the Hovawart breed
In the recreation of the breed, not only the Hovawarts participated, but also:
- German shepherd dogs
- African hounds.
It was they who influenced the formation of the appearance of the Hovawart. According to the FCI standard, Hovawart is a medium sized dog.Height at the withers of a male it is 63-70 cm, and weight - 30-40 kg. Sexual dimorphism is clearly expressed - a smaller female (58-65 cm) andweights (25-35 kg). Pets are as follows:
- Skull rounded with a wide frontal part and tapering to the nasal lobe in both vertical and horizontal planes. Stop is well defined. The superciliary arches and cheekbones are not pronounced. The transition from the frontal bone to the nose is somewhat smoothed.
- Nose with a well-developed lobe, painted in dark color, or with a light general color to match the color of the coat. The nostrils are open, well defined.
- Jaws with white teeth have a scissor bite, but a tick-shaped one is also allowed. The lips are thin, dry, dark-colored, fit tightly to the teeth.
- Eyes medium, oval. The color of the iris varies from black to light brown. The eyelids are tightly closed, the edge is pigmented in black.
- The ears hang freely on cartilage, have the shape of a triangle. Due to the high position and location on the sides of the head, the frontal part seems visually even wider. The lower edge of the ear reaches the corner of the eyes, rounded. In a wary state, the ears are raised and directed forward.
- The neck is strong, but not thick, conical in shape and of medium length.
- Torso strong, with well-developed muscles, but not massive. Somewhat elongated - 10-15% more in length than in height.
- The chest is deep, oval, with well-developed muscles. The stomach is picked up.
- Back straight, strong. The body tapers somewhat toward the tail. The loin is convex.
- Limbs medium length, parallel to each other, with good muscles and pronounced angles of the joints. Paw with tightly pressed fingers, arched. The color of the claws depends on the main coat color.
- Tail long and falls below the hocks, covered with elongated restroom hair. The tail is an indicator of the dog’s mood - it rises up above the back or falls down. At the base it is thicker, tapering to the tip.
Hovawart has a long, wavy coat, but curls are considered a disqualifying attribute. Its length is longer on the ears, tail, back of the front legs. On the back of the forelimbs there are tows. The undercoat is small. The coat is shiny, it is hard or soft, and fits tightly to the body.
Hovawart has a peaceful disposition and friendliness. Often these dogs are used not only to protect the home, but also as a dog therapist or assistant for the disabled. The Hovawart boy is a born leader and an excellent guard. Advantages of the Hovawart character: He has a pronounced territorial behavior, therefore, since ancient times, he was mainly used as a guard of the yard. Great for training, but may require patience. This is due to the fact that it matures somewhat later than other breeds. Has a strong character, self-confident and always devoted to a loving owner. Despite constant vigilance and attentiveness, the Hovawart is balanced and calm. This is a very active dog and walks for 10 minutes are not suitable for her. Important! Living in an enclosure or on a circuit are the two worst solutions for hovawarts.
The nature of males and females has significant differences. Girls learn much faster and respond faster to what they are taught. They are much trickier than boys, and can do pranks. When walking, females respect the authority of other dogs and try less to be leaders than males. At the same time, boys are more disciplined and carry out master commands much faster.
We can say that boys are kings who show everyone that they are the main ones, while girls are little princesses. An interesting fact is that in the first three years of life, the Hovawart behaves like a puppy. However, unlike some other breeds, such as Labrador, and Border Collie, he is not at all looking for communication with strangers. Appearances are deceptive. Unlike other guard dogs, the Hovawart looks very cute. The whip is completely unsuitable for training and raising this breed. The best solution is praise and gingerbread. After all, the dog will not tolerate aggression and will respond accordingly. Also, it is worth noting that Hovawarts are touchy. If the owner goes too far, the dog will close. In this case, the owner must first go towards the world.
Parenting and training
It is worth considering that hovawart grows up relatively late. In appearance, an adult dog can retain traits of puppy behavior. Parenting should be patient and gentle, forceful methods can lead to the fact that the pet closes in itself. This will make it inaccessible to training. Very often, the Hovawart shows its watchdog qualities at an early age and often does not require special training to perform protective and guard duty. Hovawart obeys commands without losing his own dignity, and always remains a friend, not a servant. Hovawart has an innate tendency to discipline, outstanding mental abilities and high trainability.
Thanks to these qualities, working with a dog is very easy. Hovawart will not set himself the goal of dominating the family, but if he sees that the owner is not coping with the duties of the pack leader, he will try to take this position and then he will decide how to behave in various situations. The Hovawarts, who must be part of the breeding, undergo operational tests, they are checked for watchdog qualities and a shot.
Features of maintenance and care
Hovawart is a strong, hardy dog that will work in any conditions. The breed is most suitable for life in the yard, but not on a leash. In addition, there should be no intermediate conditions, the dog lives either in the house or in the yard. The aviary is built at the request of the owner, but definitely the dog in it should not spend most of its free time. Hovawart is smart enough and not so ambitious to jump over fences or scold neighbors' dogs. Recently, Hoviks are increasingly turned into apartments, but then you will have to spend a lot of time walking. Hovawart needs good physical activity.
Even if the dog lives in the yard, it must be regularly taken outside the protected area. It is advisable to diversify ordinary walks with games and training. Hovawarts are very fond of water and are happy to jump into any body of water. In this case, the dog must be taught from childhood that not every swimming person needs to be saved. Leaving Hovawart has medium-long hair, it is not prone to tangling, but sheds quite strongly, especially in the off-season. If you comb the dog once a week and bathe regularly, it will always look well-groomed. An excellent solution for Hovawart owners is a fuminator with a working surface of about 10 cm.
Thanks to strict adherence to the rules of crossbreeding, the creators of the breed are able to defeat such a disease characteristic of large dogs as:
- hip dysplasia;
- hereditary heart disease;
- eye diseases.
Hovawart just exudes health. With proper care, balanced nutrition and proper maintenance, the dog can live 15-17 years. Geneticists have proven that avoiding pedigree diseases is feasible if one approaches the selection of manufacturers correctly.
Hovawart is a large dog that grows rapidly. To do this, she needs good nutrition, which supplies the body with proteins, carbohydrates, fats. You can make a diet of natural products - meat, offal, cereals and vegetables.
The daily amount of food is calculated based on the physical activity of the dog. If it is active for at least 3 hours, then the diet is increased by 40%. The diet of a pregnant and lactating female is increased by 1.5 times.
The food of a growing puppy should consist of protein food for 30-40%. In an adult dog, the proportion of proteins decreases. If hovawart eats homemade food, then it must be supplemented with vitamins for growth and strength of bones, beautiful and silky coat.
All elements are present in the finished dry feed, therefore the additional introduction of mineral and vitamin supplements is optional. An active dog should always have fresh water. Even when going for a walk, the owner should take a container of water to give a drink to the played Hovawart.
Hovawart loves to eat, so you need to monitor his diet and control weight. So that the dog does not have obesity, it is enough to feel its ribs. They should be easy to identify, but not bulge excessively.
If we talk about the cost, then the price of a puppy can reach 1000 cu Moreover, the price for "girls" is always higher than for males. The price also depends on the pedigree, age and, of course, physical form. But, as practice shows, every cent is 100% justified, and the price does not become an obstacle. After all, just look at the photo and you can fall in love with this beautiful and noble creature.
