Chinese Crested Dog: history and character
Chinese Crested Dog is perhaps one of the most original breeds among four-legged dogs. The very appearance of representatives with and without a furry coat is astonishing. In appearance, fragile and defenseless - inside are real lions that will protect their owner with all their might. Who are these original, as if extraterrestrial, creatures?
History of breed origin
Although, from where the crested breed came to us, it is not established, scientists have good reason to believe that it belongs to the oldest breeds. There is an assumption that most of the hairless dogs come from Africa. To this day, similar animals are found in the subtropics and have names, depending on geography - in Mexico it is a hairless Mexican dog, in Peru - Peruvian, Egypt - Egyptian.
In the years 900-1200 A.D. naked dogs were particularly honored. They were attributed to the 10 symbols of the Kingdom of God Ketsakoatl, they personified love and goodness. Even then, people considered the love of these extraordinary creatures for their owners to be a manifestation of the most disinterested feeling. They were also used as heating pads, letting them in under the covers, where the dogs were laid along the human body and transferred their heat to him.
And Indians from ancient tribes believed that hairless pets have healing properties. By the way, modern tribes have not lost this faith and believe that doggies help with toothache, colic, rheumatism, paralysis and various kinds of pain in the joints and spine.
It is not known for certain when exactly these amazing creatures entered Chinese territory, but there is evidence that during the reign of the Han Dynasty (206-220 BC) they were already breeding here.
It is believed that naked dogs from century to century symbolized the well-being and prosperity of nobles from China. In the 16th century, these dogs were taken on research and merchant ships, which led to the penetration of this breed in other countries.
Researchers from Spain left behind information that they met with similar animals in America, both in the south and in the north. Travelers from England and France also saw hairless dogs in the early 19th century in African and Asian countries. By the end of the 19th century, many books and manuscripts of Europe already contain information about these strange dogs that do not have wool.
However, recent archaeological research suggests that the homeland of hairless dogs is Mexico and Central America, and it was from here that they migrated further to other continents. On the island of Yucatan and Central America, during the excavation of Mayan settlements, ceramics were found on which a naked dog was painted. Mummified animals were found here in burials and sacrificial sites. Maya believed that a naked dog would lead the soul of its owner to heaven. In addition, in Mexico and still dogs, deprived of hair, are very common.
The name of the naked dogs sounds like Xoloitzcuitli, Xolotl is the god of the Aztecs, and together it translates as "the dog of the god Xolotl."
Description of the breed Chinese Crested
Representatives of this breed are distinguished by a rather extraordinary appearance. Like other four-legged animals belonging to the category of indoor, decorative or a group of toy, they differ in small size, although larger than many.
Growth males and females, close to ideal, vary from 28 to 33 cm, although, according to the standard, deviations are not a defect. But the standard weight is not specified at all, although most dogs of this breed have less than 5 kg. The standard describes Chinese crested in this way:
- Chinese crested are thin enough, have graceful, longlimbsthat seem very thin from the side.Tail elongated, tapering towards the end and holding high.
- Not only the lack of wool attracts attention to these dogs, they also have an interestingface, which has a pronounced stop (the transition from the skull to the muzzle is clearly visible). The muzzle has a rectangular shape, the jaw is equipped with sharp teeth with a scissor bite. These dogs have regular tooth loss, but this fact, like their abnormal growth, does not disqualify the pet.
- Eyes small, almond-shaped, the look is usually inquisitive. Representatives with dark brown, almost black eyes are more common, but dogs with light hair may have light shade eyes. However, blue-eyed, as well as dog with different eyes breed is not allowed.
- Auricles large, are in a standing state, in down dogs they can also hang.
Chinese Crested Colors
There are two options for Chinese crested - without wool, which is called naked and Powderpuff - down.
1. Crested “without wool”. Although the hairless dog is called naked, in fact, it still has hair on some areas of the body - it is in the area of the head, tail and limbs.
Most often, the hair is straight, forms a crest on the head, which formed the basis of the name of the breed. The tail is covered with sufficiently long hair by two-thirds, forms a brush at the end. And on the extremities, a kind of boots made of wool is obtained. In some representatives, chaotically scattered shreds of wool can be found on the body. The entire coat is soft and has no undercoat. The skin is smooth, if you feel it is hot. By the way, the show mane has a real mane on his head, and indeed, the coat of show-class dogs is much thicker and more abundant.
2. Crested with wool. Dogs-puffs have long hair all over the body, and the undercoat is also available. The lower coat is soft, silky, and the upper coat is long, stiff and denser undercoat. In the area of the muzzle it is shorter in comparison with other parts of the body, but most often the owners trim the pets so that they look more well-groomed and neat.
For an exhibition career, dogs must have properly growing and well-groomed hair, but there are almost no requirements for color. The color of the fur can be the most diverse and the location of the spots is not regulated. Although the bulk of the thoroughbred representatives has a gray or brown color, and the spots are white or gray. Downy crested more often with white hair, with spots of gray or brown.
Chinese Crested Dog Character
Communicative, friendly, idolizing his own master - if your CXC does not have at least these three qualities, think about whether it is really Chinese crested. The amazing attachment of the breed to humans has given rise to a number of myths about its mental talents. So, for example, many owners of Chinese are seriously convinced that their pets are prone to telepathy and are able to predict wishes.
There are also many stories about the so-called "curativeness" of the breed. True, this applies more to the "naked", whose skin seems hot due to the lack of hair on it. According to the owners, the naked Chinese crested dogs alleviate pain in arthrosis and rheumatism, acting as a live heating pad. It is difficult to judge how true these stories are, but the fact that the KHS really knows how to create a harmonious, peaceful atmosphere in the house is a proven fact.
One of the main phobias of the Chinese crested breed is loneliness. For a long time, an animal left in an empty apartment literally goes insane, notifying others about its misfortune with a loud howl. However, in order to bark from the heart, "puffs" and "naked" do not always need a reason, so if at some point your favorite was carried away by "oratorios", take up his education. But do not overdo it: turning the crested vocalist into a silent person will still fail.
Representatives of this breed are not attached to the sofa and are quite mobile. The back seat of the car, a bicycle basket or a regular leash - choose any method you like and feel free to take or take your pet out into the light. In addition, mischievous "crests" are always happy to play with the ball, squeaker and other dog entertainments. Well, if someone from the household joins the process, including children, there will be no limit to the joy of the “Chinese”.
CXC's love of man often comes to obsession. Puppies intuitively copy feline behavior: they rub on their feet, try to pile themselves up on their knees and play hugs with their beloved master. Trying to cultivate emotional coldness and power in Chinese crested ones is useless, and for the psyche of the animal it is also obviously harmful. If the prospect of constant close contact with your pet is seriously annoying, you will have to opt for another, less sociable breed.
Parenting and training
Often, at zooforums you can find complaints about the nearness and poor breeding of the KHS, although in reality the "Ukrainians" are smart, curious and fully trained creatures. And yet not one, even the most intellectually developed dog, will begin to train itself, so if you expect an innate sense of tact and behavioral aristocracy from an animal, then it is completely in vain.
Raising a puppy begins at birth or from the first minutes of his appearance in the house. To get started, teach your baby to sit and don’t let him crawl into your bed (yes, KHS are exceptional charm, but they should sleep on their own bed). If the puppy misses his mother and brothers too much, at first they put a heating pad on his mattress, creating the illusion of a warm dog’s belly. And do not forget that the psyche of Chinese crested dogs is very fragile, so hold your own emotions in a fist and never yell at a fined baby.
Problems with the toilet, which owners of the breed often complain about, occur mainly in individuals who have been told, poorly or too late, how to use dog accessories. On the whole, Chinese crested ones are born “swaddlers” and “hawkers”, that is, they cannot endure for a long time and prefer to do their “business” on a newspaper or in a tray than wait for walking. However, to accustom them to a street toilet is quite realistic, and the methods used are the same as for dogs of other breeds.
Despite the fact that, due to their slender complexion, CXC seems manageable and pliable, it is still necessary to train them. In particular, the command "Do not!" each adult "Chinese" is obliged to understand and perform, just like approaching the owner at his call. If desired, Chinese crested can be taught simple circus tricks. It is known that "puffs" and "naked" walk well on their hind legs and spin to music.
Chinese Crested Dog Care and Maintenance
Small Chinese crested dog, great for keeping in a city apartment. The absence of wool will protect the owner from allergies and unnecessary cleaning, she completely has no smell.
The breed has sweat glands, thanks to which the dog does not have to breathe heavily in the heat to adjust body temperature. True naked body sharply feels all the changes in the weather. In the summer heat, before going out in the sun, be sure to lubricate the skin of the dog with sunscreen.
Clothing: in cold and windy weather, always wear a sweater or jumpsuit.
Toys: Chinese crested loves to play. And it’s not necessary to buy toys, everything will fit: a ball of thread, a plastic cork from a bottle or any rubber bath toy, the main thing is that the rubber should not be too soft.
Her behavior often resembles a cat. The Chinese constantly wants to attract attention, loves to cuddle at the feet and hug, can spend hours sitting on the couch near the owner, skillfully using his front paws, catching the ball, or when waking the sleeping owner. He is well accustomed to the tray, but if the pet is naughty and goes to the toilet, wherever he wants, try to walk him more.
Nursing a Chinese Crested Dog
She does not need a haircut, but black dots will have to be removed from the skin, is it black or white eels (dead rudimentary hair). The dog is doing so-called body cleansing. Remove dots with tweezers or gauze soaked in an antiseptic solution, wiping the skin over hair growth. After the procedure, lubricate with a baby hypoallergenic cream or aftershave cream.
Naked representatives of the breed are exposed to a rash, sunburn, many are allergic to wool.
With proper care, the skin becomes soft and delicate, but it is thicker and denser than with rocks covered with wool, though wounds and cuts heal faster. In naked Chinese, the skin is light in color, tans in the summer and changes to a darker shade, during this period they change pigmentation and reach their final color.
Bathing: a naked Chinese dog 1 time in 10 days, shower gel. Wool is washed with shampoo, which gives volume and restores the structure of the hair.
Muzzle: hairs grow on hairless muzzle representatives. You can remove them using a clipper. Shave off the hairs without going beyond the line mentally drawn from the outer corner of the eye to the ear. After shaving, treat your pet's skin with an antiseptic or moisturizer.
With a naked Chinese dog you can’t go fishing or picnicking, go picking mushrooms in the forest, they are very easily bitten by horseflies, mosquitoes, ticks. But if you have a summer cottage with a sunny lawn and mowed grass, the dog will be able to play ball, run for a wand or sunbathe in the sun.
Down Chinese Dog Care
She is no different from caring for any long-haired breed.
Bathing: once every 10 days, do not comb dirty wool before bathing.
Wool: there is almost no molt in powder puff, tangles can form, be sure to comb with a metal comb every day along the entire length.
To care for puff wool you will need:
- slicker brush
- metal comb with long teeth
- hairdressing scissors (wool is cut on the legs)
- clipper (cut face, cheekbones and throat)
Carefully comb the metal comb dog over the entire body, from the roots. This procedure is an excellent massage, and distributes grease to the skin and coat, making it less likely to cut. In the case of the formation of warlocks, first carefully untangle them with your hands, and only then comb with a brush-slicker.
When the teeth of the comb are short, they do not reach the skin, combing only the wool from above, at the roots, a felt from tangle forms. Skin parasites can easily develop there, and accordingly the skin is not ventilated.
In pet stores, various products are sold to prevent and the appearance of warlocks. Dirty hair is not worth combing. If the coat is very tangled, use the conditioner, without washing it off completely, dry and comb the pet.
Wash down fluffy Chinese crested with a special shampoo for long-haired breeds, then use conditioner-conditioner. From him, the coat is silky, not electrified. The naked crested paw has a special structure. She has a specific elongated shape, similar to a cleft paw.
Claws: grow faster, less often grind, so monitor the condition of the claws, cut 1 - 2 times a month.
Teeth: Teach your pet to brush your teeth from an early age. The procedure should be done with a special paste for dogs using a finger nozzle or a children's toothbrush 1-2 times a week.
Eyes: to prevent souring, rinse the eyes of the pet once a week with a soft cloth dipped in a weak tea brew.
In nutrition: Chinese crested dogs, not picky, one might say, omnivores. They love fruits and vegetables, meat and cereals. Vitamins A, D, E, calcium and phosphorus must be present in the diet for the proper development of bones and teeth.
Chinese Crested Dog
The diet of the Chinese crested dog should be correct and balanced, with vitamins and minerals necessary for the dog's body.

- Up to 2 months old puppy fed 4-5 times a day
- 3 - 4 months - 4 times a day

- From 9 months and an adult dog is fed 2 times a day
Unfortunately, crested liver has a rather weak liver, pancreas and an allergic reaction to food is much more common than in other breeds. The result of malnutrition pustules or red pimples on the body, constantly flowing eyes, severe itching.
If you fell in love with this breed and want to buy a Chinese crested dog, you must clearly separate food for humans and food for pet.
Responsible Breeder's Rules:
- Never feed a dog food from the table
- Never mix two types of food in one feeding - ready-made food and natural food
When choosing ready-made dry food for your pet, make sure that it is super premium (for example: Acana, Bosh, ProPlan, HappyDog, FitnesTrener).
Choose food without poultry meat, especially without chicken (this is a strong allergen). Choose a serving strictly according to the weight and age of the dog, and make sure that she drinks enough fresh water.
When feeding natural food, the main thing is not to harm the pet. With care, introduce new products to the diet, monitor the condition of the skin, eyes and coat. In case of any allergy, immediately exclude the product from the diet.
Let's give food freshly prepared, room temperature. The bowl should have clean fresh water. A portion is eaten into the lap within 20 minutes, if the dog refuses to eat, we hide the bowl in the refrigerator until the next feeding. Corydalis must be fed strictly after walking.

With untimely treatment, the dog may become blind. For treatment, a tear-stimulating drug Cyclosporin is prescribed, it is in the form of drops and ointments.
How to choose a puppy
Chinese crested puppies begin to be sold at the age of one and a half months, but nothing prevents you from visiting the kennel earlier to book your baby, and at the same time evaluate the conditions in which he lives. It is necessary to get acquainted with the parents of the future pet or at least one of them. In the end, no one canceled hereditary diseases.
As for the exterior, it is unstable in Chinese crested puppies. Animals with black and chocolate wool lighten as they grow older, in many babies the proportions of the head change (the muzzle lengthens), and the crest in most young individuals is still not too pronounced and looks more like a hat.
If your choice is a Chinese crested naked, pay maximum attention to the hair on the baby's head and tail. For example, if the “forelock” and plume are thick, this feature will become brighter as they grow older. Rare hair, alas, will not become more plentiful. Sometimes puppies of hairless KHS can grow over the entire body. This is not a defect. On the contrary, such individuals are always more spectacular crest and tail. The only thing is to shave and epilate such a dog more often. Do not be shy to look “naked” in your mouth to make sure that all his teeth erupted well, or at least most of them.
When choosing between a male or a female, keep in mind that even the most intelligent Chinese “boys” mark territory. In addition, when they smell the flowing crested "young lady", they become uncontrollable and prone to shoots. Unsterilized “girls” have only a heat problem, which happens twice a year and lasts for 3 weeks. At the same time, throughout the entire mating season, the baby can leave bloody traces of discharge in the apartment, which not every owner will like.
How much is a naked Chinese crested dog
It is almost impossible to get a purebred puppy with a Chinese crest for less than 20,000 - 30,000 rubles. In general, even during "sales" arranged by the nursery, the cost of a thoroughbred baby should not fall below 15,000 rubles. If they ask less for an animal, most likely they have a serious external defect. An important point: puppies with naked Chinese crested are valued more than fluffy babies, and the price tag on them is always higher.
