Moorish idol fish: description, breeding, content, photos, video
In natural criteria, the Moorish idol lives in the Indian Ocean on the territory from the islands of Mauritius and Zanzibar to the Gulf of Mexico. This fish can be found off the coast of Micronesia and Melanesia, Polynesia, Eastern India, and also on the coast of the Land of the Rising Sun.
Zanclus cornutus fish is very beautiful and is a kind of visiting card of a reef aquarium. Having a very pretty look, idols at the same time are very demanding on the conditions of their own content, because their content is only possible for cooked amateur aquarists. Nevertheless, the idol is a very popular fish and it is quite often possible to meet it in amateur aquariums.
The fish owes its name to the Arabs, who considered it sacred, hence the name - Moorish idol. At least some religious fisherman from those places, having caught this fish in his nets, would certainly let her go after giving her a little bow. Among Russian aquarists, this fish is called zankl.
Zankl has a superior body and very much resembles the shape of the structure of scalar. The dorsal fin is very long. Wide yellowish and dark transverse stripes run across the body and fins. There are no gender differences. In natural conditions, the size of fish reaches 16-20 cm, in the criteria for an aquarium, their size is smaller.
Moorish idols can be kept in a common aquarium with angels and fish by doctors. In the aquarium, idols swim in small groups, mainly in the lower layer of the aquarium’s water. Pisces lead an active lifestyle, they are in constant motion, constantly swimming in all the hidden corners of the aquarium, constantly searching for something there. With its habits and unusual appearance, the Moorish idol is able to rive your eyes to yourself for a long time. You can keep the fish in a small flock, in pairs or one by one. It should be said right away that if you are not convinced of your own abilities and cannot devote enough time to care for these fish, then it is better to abandon them and turn your own eyes to the least demanding species of fish.
At the first settlement in a new aquarium, Zankl is constantly hiding in various shelters. Taking into account the rather high structure of the fish’s body, you need to take care of the presence of shelters in the aquarium that correspond to the fish’s dimensions, in which they could easily swim. After a couple of weeks, the fish adapt to new living conditions and begin to swim throughout the aquarium, delighting you with their pretty appearance.
As for the difficulty of keeping, the main problem is that the fish are too stressed out, which in turn presents special requirements for their transportation, as well as high demands on water quality and their own nutrition. The first sign that the fish do not feel well is blurred eyes, the appearance of various body diseases, and breaking off the upper part of the pigtail.
