How to feed a guppy - Live and dry food. Feed company "Tetra". Feed mixture “MFG”. Feeding rules.
It is difficult to overestimate the importance of proper feeding of guppies to obtain highly decorative offspring from them. Optimum water conditions, compliance with temperature and light conditions, of course, have a very significant effect on the fish content, but their role in maintaining the high decorativeness of guppies is much less.
One of the determining provisions for the proper feeding of fish, which all guppists agree with, is the need to feed the fish at least three times a day, or better, more often. For a well-balanced diet, one feeding is clearly not enough.
Guppies are almost omnivorous and not demanding on food. Along with living organisms, they also readily eat finely chopped meat, fillets of sea fish, squid, as well as dry and plant foods, cereals. But you can grow large beautiful guppies only when you feed it in sufficient quantities with feeds that are full in composition and periodically diversify them.
Fish cannot be overfed with live food, not to mention dry, otherwise they become sick and stop reproducing. The main thing in the guppy diet should be dominated by live food.
This is especially important in the first 3–7 days after birth. The conditions of feeding and feeding during this period should be optimal. Feed should be varied and not too large, in addition, they should be regularly alternated. The best live feeds are small bloodworms, daphnia, artemia, although the fish eagerly eat corvetre, moin (“live-bearer”), cyclops, and tubule (it contains a lot of proteins, but few other necessary substances, and for pregnant females it should be removed from the menu), Drosophila (especially wingless forms). It is often not recommended to give enchitreas (diluted on grated carrots): with constant feeding by them in fish, obesity occurs, and as a result, the ability to reproduce is lost.
Along with animal feeds of guppies of an older age, it is necessary to give vegetable feeds - in small quantities. It is best to teach them fish on “fasting” days. The size of the feed should be available to fish.
In winter, when there is a problem with live food, fish can be fed frozen (daphnia, cyclops, bloodworms) and salted food (before use it should be soaked in water, changing it several times). Additionally or temporarily, you can give finely chopped or scalloped meat (whale, beef), liver, heart, fillet and small caviar of marine fish, lean fish meat (cod, macrorus, putas), low-fat non-sour cottage cheese, mild grated cheeses, scrambled eggs. Guppies should be given in small quantities from plant-feed, but regularly, fresh or dried shredded lettuce, parsley, spinach, nettle leaves, sea kale, scalded with boiling water. Occasionally, fish can be fed white bread, biscuits, slightly boiled semolina, and oats.
Dry food (daphnia, gammarus, etc.) should be used only as an additional one, pre-mix it with trivitamine - oil solution A, D and E (2-3 drops per matchbox of food) or fortified fish oil (1-2 drops ) The feed is fed for 2-3 days.
Continuous feeding with dry food does not make it possible to obtain bright colors in juveniles, and especially good veil fins; in addition, it leads to a disease of the gastrointestinal tract, and in adult fish causes infertility. The exceptions are dry balanced feeds and specialty feeds for guppies such as those supplied by the company “Tetra”.
The company “Tetra" developed food specifically for guppies - Tetra guppy food (Special Diet) - balanced in all components necessary for normal and nutritious nutrition for fish kept in an aquarium.
In addition to this special feed, other feeds from this company can be recommended. One of the most common and recognized feeds is the drug. Tetramin. In its manufacture, about 40 components and vitamin supplements are used. These include: cod meat, veal and fish liver, artemia, egg yolk, mayfly larvae, squeezed wheat germ, mosquito larvae, etc. The finished product is a fragile flakes readily eaten by fish.
It is made in such a way that even its excessive content in water does not cause turbidity of the water in the aquarium. With additives of yellow organic dye - carotene - an excellent feed for decorative guppy breeds.
Tetraubin - This is a feed preparation to maintain maximum color intensity of aquarium fish. It contains almost all the main pigments that fish receive in nature. The lack of such components leads to a decrease in the brightness of the color of its inhabitants. This is a complex feed, which includes only products of natural origin. Manufacturing technology allows you to save in it the bulk of vitamins and life support elements. Increases fish resistance to disease.
Tetra phhyll rich in vitamins and contains components of plant origin, such as wheat seedlings, some aquatic plants, etc. It is intended mainly for viviparous, as well as for cyprinids and labyrinths, in the menu of which it is desirable to include herbal supplements.
For feeding juveniles are used exclusively Micromin and Tetravin. MicroMin is a starter feed for fry of the first days of life. TetraOvin begin to give when juveniles have already grown a little. The formulation of these feeds was compiled in strict accordance with the recommendations of scientists and contains most of the substances necessary for the growth and development of young fish. So, the composition of these feeds includes vitamin A, growth vitamin T, calcium phosphate, carotene, etc. The manufacturing process of these feeds also includes the obligatory treatment with ultraviolet rays.
For breeding forms, these feeds cannot completely replace live feed. All these substitutes for live food are inferior in composition. Using them for a more or less long time is not worth it. Somewhat better in composition and quality are fresh feeds of industrial manufacture. It should be remembered that their shelf life does not exceed 4 months;
As a starting feed, it is most appropriate to use freshly hatched Artemia nauplii. If juveniles do not ask this type of food, she will never be able to fully realize her abilities. Experts have repeatedly made attempts to replace nauplii arteries with young Daphnia and Cyclops, but the results left much to be desired. Nauplii are the best food for juveniles from the moment they were born and during the first three months of life. They are asked three times a day - in the morning, at noon and closer to night. As a full-fledged supplement to the diet of juveniles, we can recommend artemia meat, beef liver, fish caviar. All this is dried and crushed to a flour-like state. Before asking these feeds to fish, they must be carefully examined and large particles removed that juveniles cannot be swallowed.
If you want to grow full-fledged guppies, then we recommend preparing a mixture called “Modified Gordon Formula” (IFG). For its preparation, you will need 454 g of beef liver, 454 g of dried brine shrimp, about 84 g of oatmeal and 2 tablespoons of table salt.
First, carefully separate all the veins from the liver, then cut it into small pieces, fill it with cold water so that it covers the liver and grind it in a mixer for 3-4 minutes, then add salt and mix thoroughly. If you added a normal amount of water, then the mixture will turn out to be quite liquid, soup-like. After this, fill in dried artemia and mix until a homogeneous mass is obtained with a slight excess of juice; then start adding a little oatmeal. Put the oatmeal no more than is required to absorb the residual liquid. The finished mixture should have a pudding consistency. When this paste is completely ready, put it in small jars and sterilize in boiling water for 45 minutes. During this time, the liver brightens, and the paste itself thickens. At the end of sterilization, tightly seal the jars.
This mixture can feed fish of any age, adding it to live food. You should start to feed a little - and do not give another feed until you eat this. The food can stay in the aquarium for up to 8 hours without causing water damage. If after this time the feed remains intact, remove it from the aquarium. Obviously, something is wrong with him and the fish should no longer ask him.
By the end of the second month, when all the young animals are sorted by sex, it is time to start feeding the fish with more significant additives. First of all, to the nauplii of artemia and MFG, you should add a tubule, which is very useful for fast-growing guppies. In principle, by this time the fish are able to eat daphnia. Daphnia, although very fond of fish, is a low-nutritional product.
Therefore, try to adhere to the rule - ask Daphnia no more than once a week. For example, their Florida guppists rarely succeed in breeding highly decorative guppy breeds, as they constantly feel the lack of a tubifex and are forced to compensate for its deficiency by daphnia.
Other artificial fish feeds should only be in addition to the main guppy menu. Usually cooked feed, in particular canned food, is set no more than once a day. In general, try to acquire canned food of three or four types and change them day after day.
From live feeds, in addition to those mentioned above, you can periodically set enchitreas, microworms, small fruit flies Drosophila, coronetra and even ground earthworms. But they should be used only as additives and not form the basis of the guppy diet.
It is practically impossible to give an exact definition of the amount of food needed for a guppy. But you need to adhere to the golden rule - set the feed in as small portions as possible and as often as possible. One serving should be completely eaten by the fish in 15 minutes.
The first time to feed the fish in the early morning, the second time before going to work; then at noon; the next feeding - when you come home from work, and the last time - half an hour before you turn out the lights in the aquarium.
Always remember: super guppies also require super diets. Only constant attention to all the little things in the matter of feeding guppies guarantees you success.
And one more remark. It is very important not to overfeed the fish. Producers receiving too much feed can become infertile. When leaving on vacation or a business trip, it’s better not to feed the fish at all than to entrust the feeding to inexperienced “breadwinners”: with their help, you can completely lose fish.
Fasting for one month does not destroy adult guppies: the ability to reproduce will quickly recover.
