Conditions of detention
Plecostomuses are nocturnal inhabitants. In youth, fish are friendly, with age they become territorial and pugnacious. They can not stand their own kind, only those with whom they grew up are recognized. Plecostomus with scalar and discus will peel the skin. The fish protects their favorite places from those fish that have the same way of eating. It is advisable to keep plecostomuses in a separate container or plant large fish in them. To prevent the plecostomus from jumping out of the aquarium, cover the container.
The temperature suitable for plecostomus is 22-30 degrees. Cleanliness and filtration, important conditions for keeping fish. Hardness - 4-28 degrees. The reaction of the water is neutral, the fish is comfortable and in a slightly acidic environment. Acidity - 6.5-8. Change 30% of the water once a week. The volume in the aquarium for plectostomy is very important. Choose an aquarium with at least 300 liters. Since the fish grows rapidly, it needs free space.
Coarse sand or smooth pebbles can be taken as a substrate. Then the catfish will not hurt himself. Plecostomus likes to hide in thickets of algae. Plants must have a strong stem and strong roots: ferns, echinodorus, anubias, cryptocarins. For additional shading, use floating plants. Bright light fish do not like. Shelters in the aquarium are required: ceramic pipes, driftwood, shards, pots. There the fish will sit out during the day.
The basis of the plecostomus diet is algae and vegetable feed. Catfish can also eat live food (bloodworms, small crustaceans, earthworms, insect larvae). The aquarium should be overgrown with algae. If a fish eats plants faster than they have time to grow, then feed the catfish with artificial feed. Of vegetables, prefers cabbage, cucumbers, spinach, zucchini, lettuce. Fish are fed in the evening.
The plecostomus has an elongated body covered with bone plates everywhere except the abdomen. High dorsal fin and large head, which only increases with age. The eyes are small, located high on the head and can roll up in the eye sockets, which looks like he is winking. The lower mouth, with large lips covered with thorns like a grater, is adapted to peel algae from hard surfaces.
Body color is light brown, but looks much darker due to the large number of dark spots. This color conceals the fish against the background of the bottom of fallen leaves and stones. There are species with fewer spots or their complete absence.
In nature they grow up to 60 cm, in aquariums less, about 30-38 cm. They grow quickly and can live in the aquarium for up to 15 years, although they live longer in nature.
Habitat of plectostomy catfish
In nature, plectostomuses inhabit ponds and rivers. They can feel good both in fresh and in salt waters. The name "plecostomus" translates as "folded mouth." Many species fall under this definition. Although among themselves they have differences. As a rule, they are different in color, size. In total, there are about one hundred and twenty species of different catfish. Even scientists are still confused in the classification.
Nevertheless, there are certain problems in the maintenance of plecostomy. They need big aquariums. It is not so easy to choose the right food. By the way, plecostomus can eat vegetables. For example, in the photo you can see how a cucumber is eating a pleskostomus with appetite. Fish are not picky about water, the main thing is that it is clean. Therefore, you will have to change the water often.
Compatibility and Feeding
Som plelectostomus is a peaceful fish; it can coexist, in principle, with any neighbors larger than the size of their mouth. It only gets along poorly with food competitors - the same catfish suckers. Indeed, vegetation on glasses and decorations, for example, a 150 liter aquarium is enough for only one such catfish.
In addition to algal fouling, plecostomuses with great pleasure eat live food (tubifex, bloodworms), spirulina-based cereals, scalded lettuce, fresh cucumbers, zucchini. At a young age, plectostomuses clean the glass of the aquarium, of course, better, then they become lazier and eat more and more often the food offered by a caring owner. Like most catfish, they are most active at night, so it is better to give food immediately before turning off the lights.
